Health Care Options
Innovation in the Face of ER Overcrowding
Overcrowded emergency departments and long-wait times. This issue often found its way to the front page of the major papers. Many patients were presenting with non-emergent health issues. But, you can’t simply tell people not to go to the ER as it is a very complex often emotionally charged decision to do so.
In my role, I led the development of communications program that directly impacted the reduction of non-emergent visits in ERs by 34% in 3 years. A key component of the plan was the development of an innovative, first of its kind, web based search tool that allows people to put in their postal code and find a health care option in their community. This app was the anchor of an overall communications program educating segments of the population about the health care options available to them close to home.
